“Ironically, I didn’t meet 11-year-old Sunny before adopting him,” says Jessica. “In fact, my friend in Carson City, Nevada whose late sister was his previous owner, showed me his photo on the Furry Friends website, and I was instantly drawn to him.  

“I’ve always wanted a black cat because I know that, despite their sweet nature, they’re less likely to be adopted. I promptly began communicating with Jenn Hutchman to make the necessary arrangements to meet Sunny at the shelter. My friend joined me when I flew from my home in Reno to Portland, Oregon, as I was inexperienced with cats. Another sister of his late, loving owner picked us up from the Portland airport and drove us to Furry Friends.

“We moved to Clark County five years ago,” Kevin says. “We found Furry Friends shortly thereafter and they’ve been a blessing to our family ever since.

“Married to a wonderful woman named Andrea, ours is truly a multi-generational household as we are the guardians of our 16-year-old granddaughter, Desirae, and my 87-year-old mother, Patricia. Being senior citizens, we’ve had many pets over the years, including many wonderful cats. Three years ago, we reached out to Furry Friends when Desirae entered high school, feeling it was the perfect time for her to have a companion animal, and that’s how Laena became part of our loving home.

“My husband and I live together with our two sons, two dogs and one bird,” Leah says. “My 17-year-old cat, Todd, who passed away last summer, was my baby and I was devastated.      

“My partner and I lost our sweet 17-year-old female cat a few months ago, and we were devastated,” says Kris.

“We knew that we wanted to find a playmate for our 1-year-old female kitty, Rin. As we considered all of the photos on the Furry Friends website, we were immediately drawn to Asta (formerly named Ginger Ale). I promptly put in an application for him, and then, to my surprise, I received a message from the adoption team to come and meet Asta at their adoption event at PetSmart that weekend.

“My first cat was given to me as a Christmas gift when I was 9 years old, and I had her for 19 years,” Laura says.

“It’s been several years since my childhood kitty passed away, and I felt ready for a new companion. After seeing numerous cat photos on the Furry Friends website, I went to the shelter, fully expecting to adopt a kitten. However, I felt a connection with Kiki, who was then called Raven. I felt as if she needed me as much as I needed her, so the decision was easy!

“Being cat lovers, we’ve always had cats in the past,” says Kelci. “After looking at numerous photos of kitties on the Furry Friends website, my husband Hai and I attended one of their adoption events at PetSmart.

“After I adopted Bentley from Furry Friends, I changed his name to Donovan,” says Diane. “The only reason that I was looking for a cat, specifically a tuxedo, is because my wonderful, lifelong tuxedo, Bosco, had passed away.

“After viewing numerous photos on the Furry Friends website, I decided to visit the shelter. As soon as Milo was shown to me, I just fell in love with him. Happily for us both, he adjusted pretty quickly to living in my house. He’s definitely made my life more joyful. I was grieving terribly after having to put my sweet senior kitty down, and he helped me begin to heal.

“Junior showed up in our backyard mid-December of 2025,” says Lynda. “We followed the usual protocol of attempting to find his owner, but we never did.

“He slept either on our patio or on our neighbor’s patio until he was injured and we had him treated at the emergency vet. We also had him neutered and vaccinated and left him outside because we already had five cats in the house – aged 15, 12, 11, 9 and 4, all of them backyard rescues.

“I’ve had numerous cats in the past, many I rescued myself and ensured that they all went to amazing homes,” says Keely. “But as for me personally, I’ve had five.

“After losing my beloved RJ who had passed at the age of 18 in November 2024, I began searching for another cat on the Furry Friends website,” says Jan.

“I currently live on my own with a female dog named Maisy and a male cat named Sawyer,” says Aimee. “After the loss of my female Himalayan, I could see how much Sawyer needed a friend.

“I had several mostly outdoor kitties growing up in a rural area, and didn’t have any until 2020,” Samantha says. “Now I have seven ... whoops!

“I foster failed two Furry Friends’ brothers, Critter (formerly Ditto) and Creature (formerly Domino). Fortunately, they both got along well with my other cats, especially my male kitties, and nowadays they all play happily together.

“We had recently lost our senior kitty to cancer, had a lot of love left to give, and another young cat at home named Maizie who still needed a companion,” Samantha says.

“After viewing the various photos on the Furry Friends website, we attended one of their adoption events at PetSmart on Valentine’s Day this year. How fitting was that?

“Being a cat person, I’ve always had cats in the past,” says Dawn.
“After seeing Lil Bit’s photo on the Furry Friends website, I inquired about her and was told that she was at PetSmart. So, of course, I went there to meet her. The reason I chose her was because she kept trying to leave with me! We just connected.

“When Bob and I picked up our kitties from Furry Friends, none of them had been named yet, says Kim. “Having come from two different feral colonies, they couldn’t have been more different, and yet they love each other as if they were biological brothers, and we love them all equally. We gave them Hawaiian names: Mali’e (calm/peaceful), Kolohe (rascal) and Kanani (precious one).

“We had a tabby named Margo whom we adopted from a Humane Society in Michigan and who was with us for over 10 years before passing from cancer/diabetes,” says Nataliia.

“Since we’re often away for work and school, we were looking for a pair of bonded kittens to make certain they were never lonely. I fortunately found just such a pair on the Furry Friends website. I fell in love with the pictures of Jovi and her much adored, bonded brother, who was then called Buddy.

“I have had cats my whole life,” Stefan says. “My wife and I read the profiles of various cats on the Furry Friends website and decided to attend one of their adoption events at PetSmart.

“We’ve always had cats in the past and currently have two,” says Nicole. “While one is a very loving fluffy Tuxedo named Hamilton, our other one is a former barn cat and spends a good deal of time outdoors.

“After viewing numerous kitties on the Furry Friends’ website, we attended an adoption event at PetSmart, where our daughter fell in love with a kitten named Gimlet. She was fairly shy, and because her sister had just been adopted that morning, she was left all alone.

“I have had cats ever since I was born!” Heather says.

“We had recently lost one of our two senior cats and wanted some new, younger friends for our other senior cat and our five-year-old daughter. After visiting the Furry Friends’ website, we attended an adoption event at PetSmart and came across a pair of bonded kitten sisters called Strawberry Shortcake and Blackberry Tart.
