Kiki and Laura Garrison: Furry Friends Fur-Ever
“My first cat was given to me as a Christmas gift when I was 9 years old, and I had her for 19 years,” Laura says.
“It’s been several years since my childhood kitty passed away, and I felt ready for a new companion. After seeing numerous cat photos on the Furry Friends website, I went to the shelter, fully expecting to adopt a kitten. However, I felt a connection with Kiki, who was then called Raven. I felt as if she needed me as much as I needed her, so the decision was easy!
“Kiki mostly hid under my bed the first week, barely eating or drinking for the first few days. While I was concerned, I saw that she was using her litter box and that her toys would be rearranged, so I knew that she was coming out at night and exploring the house. Thankfully, with time and patience, she emerged from her shell, became comfortable with our routine, and allowed her true personality to shine through.
“Because I live alone and work remotely, I wanted a companion to keep me company. Kiki has been a great fit for me. She’s the sweetest cat I’ve ever known, but she’s sassy too, and is the perfect combination of chill and fun. I’ve bought her tons of toys, but oddly enough, she prefers playing with hair ties! She likes tossing them into the air and catching them or running across the room to pounce on them.
“Kiki loves cheek scratches: they’re her favorite. She’s not much of a cuddler so far, but she likes being near people with whom she’s comfortable. I’d love it if she’d cuddle with me eventually, but if she doesn’t, that’s okay too. One of her most endearing habits is sitting at the top of the staircase and tossing her toy mouse down the stairs. She then runs down, grabs it, runs back up to the top of the stairs, and repeats the same thing. It’s hilarious to watch!
“At night, Kiki sleeps wherever she wants. Usually she sleeps in bed with me, but sometimes she likes sleeping on the couch or on her cat tree.”
