Sunny and Jessica Song: Furry Friends Fur-Ever
“Ironically, I didn’t meet 11-year-old Sunny before adopting him,” says Jessica. “In fact, my friend in Carson City, Nevada whose late sister was his previous owner, showed me his photo on the Furry Friends website, and I was instantly drawn to him.
“I’ve always wanted a black cat because I know that, despite their sweet nature, they’re less likely to be adopted. I promptly began communicating with Jenn Hutchman to make the necessary arrangements to meet Sunny at the shelter. My friend joined me when I flew from my home in Reno to Portland, Oregon, as I was inexperienced with cats. Another sister of his late, loving owner picked us up from the Portland airport and drove us to Furry Friends.
“Sunny’s adjustment to living with me was immediate! After flying from Portland back to Reno, we arrived at my house. I kept all of the doors of my house open, and within an hour of our arrival, Sunny jumped on my bed and slept there the entire night. Not only has he slept in my bed every night since then, he was affectionate from the first night: lots of head bunting and grooming. He followed me around the house on the second day and promptly became my little shadow.
“Since I’m single, I’m so happy and so blessed to have Sunny in my life. I’m also a first time cat owner (my late parents had dogs, not cats). He makes me smile and laugh every day with his talkative nature and playful antics. He has such a loving personality. As a former workaholic, having Sunny here has made me slow down and achieve a better life-work balance.
“Sunny’s favorite toy is a humble tennis ball that he loves chasing in the early dawn hours and again at dusk. He also loves playing hide-and-seek, and is absolutely obsessed with hiding under beds and blankets and making me chase him!
To say Sunny’s a lover is an understatement: he sits on my lap for several hours each day and adores being petted.
“Silly quirks? He follows me into the bathroom. Whenever I take a bubble bath and have my Korean beauty mask on, he jumps onto the bathroom sink and stares at me like I’m crazy. I can’t stop laughing when I see his expression! Another funny quirk: he gets jealous when, as a semi-retired pharmacy professor, I have the occasional Zoom meeting. He ‘crashes’ most of my Zoom lectures and either meows loudly or stares at me. My students all laugh at the way he demands my attention.
“Sunny sleeps in my bed every night, usually between my ankles!”
