Blanche and Skye and Zak : Furry Friends Fur-Ever
“We’ve had several cats in the past and have two at home,” says Skye. “What we needed, we knew, was one who was good with others. Enter Sawyer, now Blanche, named after the witch cat from the Japanese horror movie ‘Hausu.’
“Furry Friends allows the cats to roam around together, which was an excellent sign for me. When I met Blanche, he seemed so sad, hiding away in the catio’s ‘doghouse.’ And yet, he allowed me to crawl inside and coax him out without hissing or swatting. Minutes later, he was purring and drooling in my lap, and I knew that I simply had to have him! He’s still the most tolerant cat I’ve ever met.
“After we brought Blanche home, we kept him in a room, separated from the other two cats for a few days. Our intention was to ramp up the introductions slowly, but we wound up going faster than we’d have preferred because he would yowl when he knew we were home and not with him. In fact, he still does. He acts like a sheepdog corralling all of ‘his’ people into the same room! It’s so completely and utterly charming.
“We lost our 23-year-old cat, Freddy, several months before adopting Blanche. Whereas Freddy was extremely affectionate, our other two are more independent. Happily for us, Blanche fulfills that need for affection in our lives. He not only gets along well with the other kitties, he’s far more playful than we had ever expected him to be. The staff at the shelter even said, ‘he doesn’t play,’ but I think he was just too depressed after having been abandoned. He’s wild and has even convinced our lazy cats to play a little … haha.
“Besides playing with the other cats, Blanche only plays with a wand toy that has a mouse on the end. He catches the mouse and proudly drags it around along with the wand while trilling. As to whether he enjoys being petted and cuddled: absolutely. We have to cover ourselves with blanket ‘armor’ because he loves kneading so much! And not surprisingly, he sleeps between my partner, Zak, and me at night.”
