Angel and Ramona and Misty Ray: Furry Friends Fur-Ever

“Angel and Ramona were part of a group of nine kittens I was fostering last year,” says Misty. “Ramona came with her sister, Quimby, as in Ramona Quimby, age 8, for those who remember the ‘Beverly Cleary’ series. Angel came with her brother Leon.

“Ramona’s and Quimby’s looks were unique -- a combination of kitten, raccoon and Stitch from the movie ‘Lilo and Stitch.’ They had shorter legs, skinny little necks and itty-bitty heads with enormous ears! They were adorable and very snuggly. Angel had great ears too, but she was the shyest kitten of all and only came out of hiding to play with the other kittens. It took me months to gain Angel’s trust.

“Angel became best friends with a tuxedo kitten named Marlena. While I had hoped they would be adopted together, it didn’t work out that way. Ramona and Quimby were supposed to have been adopted together, but Quimby was adopted by one of the staff members at a spay/neuter clinic. The end result: Angel and Ramona remained with me.

“Due to the high volume of kittens at Furry Friends last season, it took longer than normal to have all of the females spayed. By then I was attached to Angel and Ramona, and since they weren’t going to be adopted with their ‘besties,’ they were going to have to stay with their other ‘bestie,’ me!

“Ramona is a chunky little monkey, and goes by such nicknames as Mona Mona, Mona the Moose, my moose caboose and chunky nugget. Her legs are still shorter than a normal cat’s legs, which makes her body look that much bigger, but she’s incredibly active, playing for hours with a bird on a wire that’s suction cupped to the floor. She runs around the house as if she’s in a marathon and she’s just as cuddly as she was as a kitten.

“Angel is slender and tall with the best ears and an extremely long tail. She was recently diagnosed with FIP+ after a week of a severe fever, significant weight loss and obvious lethargy. Presently, she’s a month into her three-month treatment and responding well. Now I pray that she makes a full recovery and that none of the other cats here become infected. I’m so grateful to be able to help her through this ordeal.

“While Angel and Ramona are still trying to gain the love and trust of my resident cat Dharma, the self-appointed ‘queen’ of the household, they’ve both won over Dharma’s brother, Greg, who’s as smitten with them as I am.

“I’ve been thinking of hitting the road for awhile in a travel trailer, so I’m trying to convince my brood that they want to be traveling kitties. We’ll see how that plays out!”
