Sweetie D and Michelle Covington : Furry Friends Fur-Ever Tail
“She came to us as Sweet Dumpling,” says Michelle. “Very aptly named, we tweaked it slightly, calling her Sweetie D (Sweet Potato Dumpling when she’s in trouble).
“Although she had been on my radar, we actually visited the shelter to meet her brother. Of all her littermates, she was introduced as the quiet one who sits back and observes. And she did. She sat in the cat condo watching us play with her siblings before coming out to sniff my partner and me. After assessing us, she climbed into his lap. We had been chosen.
“Her adjustment to our home was immediate! She was all over the place, exploring, then running to us, making sure it was okay, then running off to explore some more. It was awesome and heartwarming, and we eagerly embraced her. Who wouldn’t embrace such a loving, intelligent, beautiful girl like our Sweetie D!
“She loves to play fetch with her Woobie (a Kong Hedge Hog) and fur rats. She also loves wands (automated or not) and balls. AND she absolutely LOVES being petted and cuddled. She’ll ask to be held and won’t take ‘no’ for an answer. Oftentimes, she wants to be held for 15-20 minutes, purring the whole time. But she’s not a lap cat. She prefers being at your shoulder or chest and being walked around.
“While Sweetie D loves to be around us, she’s emerging from her kitten shell and becoming more independent. She’s very comfortable in her surroundings. Initially timid with new people, she very much enjoys the ‘regulars’ and comes running whenever someone she knows visits.
“Quirky, yet endearing, she’s a diva when it comes to her wet food and what she wants to eat on any given day. She simply won’t tolerate wet food that’s been out all day (who can blame her). If you want to know if she’s hungry, hold out the can, and if she stands on two legs and grabs it close to her, then she’s ravenous. If she nudges it with her head, it’s ‘yeah,’ she could take a bite. Afterwards she’ll wipe her paw along the tabletop as if trying to bury it, telling you that she’s finished. She’ll do the same thing if she wants more or if you give her a type of food that doesn’t interest her. So, you have to watch her closely to figure out what she’s trying to tell you.
“At night, Sweetie D typically sleeps under the covers by our feet or in the cat condo by our bed. She’s never too far away from us.”
