Neko and Nola and Theresa Thomas : Furry Friends Fur-Ever Tail
“Awhile back, I adopted Morty, a magnificent Ginger,” Theresa says. “He was clearly lonely and in need of a playmate since my two older, 13-year-old ‘ladies’ whom I adopted when I lived in Miami, would have nothing to do with him.
“I therefore adopted Neko (formerly Charlie), and they instantly became best friends! Morty behaved like the older brother and they went leaping and jumping everywhere together. Long story short … Morty got very sick – no one knows why – and passed, leaving Neko alone and crying for Morty all of the time.
“We reached out to Neko’s foster mom and asked if she still had any of his siblings. She said no, but that she did have a feisty little Calico named Leslie whom she felt would match well with him. Since Leslie (now Nola) was so tiny, we worried that Neko would overpower her, but, happily, from the moment we adopted her, her adjustment to living here wasn’t only immediate, she’s more than held her own! And talk about opposites attracting. Neko is pure brown, possibly from the Havana Brown breed while Nola is an extremely unique looking Calico.
“Both kittens have brought a welcome craziness and life to the house. While the two older ‘ladies’ had an adjustment period punctuated by hissing, they showed no aggression towards them whatsoever. Now, only one growls and hisses, but that’s because naughty Neko ‘pushes her buttons.’
“The kittens love playing with toys, especially cat springs. I have a long hallway with a wooden floor, and they gallop up and down it, chasing each other and the springs. They also love cuddling and getting kitty massages. One of Neko’s most endearing quirks is the way he tries to suckle my earlobe! And when he’s looking for me, he doesn’t meow, he chirps and trills. Nola loves to be under the covers, so whenever she finds an opening, she burrows in.
“As for their sleeping arrangements: they sleep everywhere – in boxes, on the back of the recliner and, best of all, in bed with me.”
