California and Loki and the Engbergs: Furry Friends Fur-Ever
“I’ve had cats since I was a child,” Elizabeth says.
“While fostering Solana and her litter of 4-week-old kittens, I’d pretty much planned on adopting California as soon as she was born. The reasons I chose her were because my 19-year-old calico and 14-year-old dog had recently passed, and I have a soft spot for calicos. My husband and children, meanwhile, fell in love with Loki since he’s naturally social and affectionate.
“Both kittens had already gotten used to our home, adjusting to it – and us – as they grew. They bring us so much joy and make our house feel less empty. Our youngest child recently moved out too, so it was far too quiet here. We now have a total of 5 cats, including one of Solana’s kittens from a previous litter, and all three kittens are best buddies. My 5-year-old and 15-year-old cats are also bonding with them well.
“California and Loki enjoy running on their cat wheel and chasing after teaser toys and catnip toys, but their favorite toys are the little spring toys. Both kittens are affectionate and cuddly, and both love being petted while purring loudly. Loki loves being picked up and carried while California is more independent and prefers being held only briefly.
“Loki’s most endearing traits are standing on his hind legs and raising his paws when he wants to be picked up and climbing into my lap and tapping my chest to be petted. As for California: she’s feisty and independent, but she can hear – and probably smell -- the treat bags being opened while she’s sleeping on the other side of the house regardless of how quietly I open them!
“At night, they either sleep in our bed or on the cat tree in our bedroom when my husband and I move around in our sleep too much.”
