Cindy Wanjihia: Volunteer Spotlight
“I’ve been volunteering with Furry Friends since November 2022,” says Cindy. “It’s been such a rewarding and joyful experience.
“I found Furry Friends while I was recovering from a traumatic hiking accident that almost took my life and shifted everything for me. It gave me a fresh perspective and made me realize how important it is to go after the things I truly care about. I’ve always had a special love for cats, and even dreamed of one day running a cat sanctuary or rescue. While I was getting back on my feet, I made a promise to myself: no more waiting for the ‘right time.’ Life’s too short.
“As it happened, I was trying to find a safe home for a friendly tomcat and was referred to Furry Friends by another shelter that was full. Furry Friends was full too, but when I learned they were a cat-only rescue, it resonated with me. The more I got to know them and saw the love and care they give every cat, the more connected I felt to their mission. Volunteering here has become an important part of my healing journey and a meaningful step toward the future I hope to create.
“I’m part of the Thursday morning crew. It’s the perfect way to start the day. I help clean the cat spaces, scoop litter, refresh bedding, and ensure they’re fed and comfy. But the best part is spending time with the cats: playing, snuggling or just being with them. Whether they want to chase a toy or just relax, I want them to feel safe, loved and cared for. I leave with fur on my clothes and a smile on my face!
“I’ve always believed that cats are incredibly special and often misunderstood. Each cat here has its own story and personality, and getting to know them is like unwrapping a new surprise every week. I’ve also found a second family in my Thursday morning crew. We’ve built real friendships and share lots of laughs. All in all, it’s a great mix of caring for cats and connecting with awesome people.
“The hardest part is seeing cats who are sick, scared or emotionally traumatized. My heart could burst from the mix of sadness, love and the deep desire to help them heal. But I’ve learned that just being present, quietly offering them kindness and gentle care can mean everything. Watching even the smallest signs of trust begin to bloom is both humbling and moving. And of course, the other big challenge is not taking all of them home with me!
“I’m deeply aware of how important it is to build communities where everyone feels truly seen and supported. It's about respect, understanding and lifting each other up. For me, this is a way to honor my own experiences and help pave the way for a stronger, kinder community for everyone.
“My partner and I have had two wonderful sibling cats (they came to us as 10-week-old kittens) for eight years, and their unique personalities fill our days with joy and surprises. Our tortie girl is fiercely independent, a graceful huntress with a bit of an only-child attitude who has a soft spot for cuddles when the mood strikes her. Our tabby boy is the complete opposite: calm, aloof and Buddha-like until someone enters the kitchen. Then it’s all about food, and he’ll let out the most enthusiastic, attention-grabbing calls until he’s fed!
“I have a deep love for nature and find great comfort in the presence of trees and the cozy, rainy and misty weather that defines the Pacific Northwest (one of the reasons we moved here). When I’m not hiking or exploring, I immerse myself in a good book or search for unique treasures while thrifting.”
