“We had two cats, adopted as kittens, that lived for 17 and 19 years,” says Michelle.
“I recently saw a Furry Friends Facebook post mentioning that one particular litter was at PetSmart, so we rushed over to meet them. We chose Butters and Harper, now Sugar and Daisy, because I loved their coloring and because they had such sweet looks to their faces. They were also the last two from their litter, which worked out perfectly since we were hoping to get two siblings.
“Once home, we did a slow adjustment because we have a small, anxious dog and we wanted all of them to get along together. The kittens stayed in a bedroom for a few weeks with gradual introductions to our dog, which resulted in them ‘tolerating’ each other. Our four sons, on the other hand, loved them immediately.
“Sugar and Daisy have brought so much love and entertainment to our house. We love watching them play together. We love seeing them cuddle up together and groom each other. It’s nice to have little ‘couch buddies’ when sitting down to read or watching a movie at night.
“The kittens are more comfortable with the dog than he is with them. Sugar wants to be friends with him and attempts to play with him, but he doesn’t want to play with her. Sometimes, she’ll even curl up next to him for a nap. Daisy has a healthy respect for the dog. She watches him closely, ready to defend herself if needed, but they mostly ignore each other. The dog only barks at the kittens when he thinks they’re doing something they shouldn’t.
“Sugar and Daisy’s favorite toy is a little ball track toy where they can bat the balls around the tower. They also like to chase bugs that sneak into the house. But, ultimately, they are one another’s favorite playmates. I’m so pleased that we adopted two kittens. Every kitten needs another kitten.
“As far as affection goes, Sugar is the cuddlebug. She curls up with her humans, her sister and her dog brother. Daisy is more particular and only cuddles when it’s her idea, unless she’s cuddling with Sugar – she’s always willing to do that!
“Sugar’s funniest quirk is that she loves our robot vacuum. As soon as she hears it turn on, she runs over and follows it around, attacking the little brushes, and riding on top of it. Daisy loves to visit my husband while he’s working in his home office. She walks all over his desk and keyboard and then steps on the controls for his standing desk and moves it up and down. She also likes to sit with my one of our sons when he’s doing his homework.
“The kittens have free range of the house at night. One son, in particular, leaves his door open for them to sleep in his room, and they usually spend part of the night with him.”
